Reclaiming Your Identity Around Health: When the Problem Isn't the Problem

6/26/26 | Written by Idina Cole

For the longest time, I thought health was my problem.

I thought the problem was the number on the scale. I thought the problem was my energy level. I thought the problem was the way I would start something, do well for a few days, and then somehow find myself right back where I started.

If you've ever struggled with your health, whether physically, mentally or emotionally, you probably know exactly what I'm talking about.

You decide this is going to be the time you finally get serious. You buy the healthier groceries. You make the plan. You promise yourself you're going to stick with it. Maybe you even do well for a while. Then life happens, your focus shifts, and before long you're frustrated because the results aren't showing up as quickly as you hoped.

For years, I approached physical health the same way I approached so many other challenges in my life. I looked for a solution. I looked for a strategy. I looked for something I could fix.

What I didn't realize was that I was asking the wrong question.

Recently, the Lord began showing me a pattern that had been hiding in plain sight. Strangely enough, it didn't start with my physical health at all. It started with my car.

A few months ago, my car stopped starting properly. We checked everything we knew to check. The battery seemed fine. The starter wasn't the issue. The alternator wasn't the issue. Yet every day I found myself dealing with the same frustrating problem and no clear answer.

Weeks went by before I finally stopped trying to figure it out myself. And thought okay, now it's time to contact a mechanic, and pressure started setting in a new set of problems. The quotes I was receiving for someone to diagnose the problem were astronomical.

So, one morning I felt prompted to look into the key fob. Not because I suddenly knew anything about cars and certainly not because I had some special mechanical knowledge. I simply felt led to stop leaning on my own understanding long enough to ask God for wisdom.

Within minutes I found the answer.

After replacing the battery in the key fob, the anti-theft system needed to be reset. I go to Youtube for situations like this and lo and behold...I followed the instructions, waited about fifteen minutes, turned the key, and the car started without issue.

As simple as that sounds, the Lord used that moment to show me something much bigger.

The problem wasn't that the answer had been hidden from me.

The problem was that I had spent weeks trying to solve it without Him.

As I reflected on that experience, I started noticing the same pattern in other areas of my life. God had done something similar with financial decisions. He had done it with business decisions. He had done it with situations that seemed impossible until I stopped striving long enough to invite Him into the process.

That's when Proverbs 3:5-8 stopped being a comforting scripture and became a way of life.

For years I had treated those verses like an emergency response plan. Whenever something went wrong, I would run to them. Whenever I felt overwhelmed, stressed, frustrated, or unsure of what to do next, I would remind myself to trust in the Lord with all my heart and lean not on my own understanding.

And God was always faithful.

What I failed to notice was that I was usually turning to the scripture after I had already exhausted myself trying to solve the problem on my own.

The revelation was simple, but it changed everything.

What if Proverbs 3:5-8 wasn't meant to be my last resort?

What if it was meant to be my starting point?

As I sat with that question, I realized something else. The entire foundation of Daughter's First Living was hidden inside those verses.

A daughter doesn't carry the pressure of figuring everything out alone. A daughter gets to partner with her Father.

A daughter doesn't have to manufacture outcomes through striving and performance. A daughter gets to trust the One who already sees the path ahead.

That's what Proverbs 3:5-8 teaches us. It invites us to trust, surrender our need for control, acknowledge God in every area of life, and then follow His direction as He makes the path clear.

The more I embraced that truth, the more I began noticing subtle changes in my life.

One of the biggest surprises came when I realized I was finishing things.

Projects that had been sitting untouched were getting completed. Tasks that once felt overwhelming no longer carried the same weight. I wasn't waking up every morning already exhausted before the day had begun, and I wasn't battling the same procrastination that had followed me for years.

The change wasn't dramatic.

It happened quietly enough that I almost missed it.

But as I paid attention, I began to understand what God was showing me. The more I rooted myself in my identity through Jesus Christ, the more my life started reflecting alignment instead of chaos. It wasn't because I had discovered a better productivity system. It wasn't because I had suddenly become more disciplined. It wasn't because I was trying harder.

It was because I was learning to live from who I already was.

That's where health entered the conversation for me.

For years, I approached health like a problem to solve. Lose the weight. Lower the numbers. Follow the plan. Get the results.

But what if health isn't where the journey begins?

What if health is simply one of the places where alignment becomes visible?

That question changed everything.

Instead of obsessing over outcomes, I started focusing on partnership. Instead of asking how to force results, I started asking God what alignment looked like in this season. The practical steps still mattered. I began making healthier choices. I became more intentional about what I was eating. I started moving my body consistently. I drank more water. I paid attention to habits that supported the life God was calling me to steward.

But the difference was that I was no longer chasing health from a place of fear. I was no longer looking for validation in the number on the scale or constantly measuring my progress by what I could see. I knew that as long as I was doing my part in stewarding the body God had given me, He would do His part.

Scripture tells us in 3 John 1:2:

"Beloved, I pray that in every way you may succeed and prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers."

For the first time, I began to see health differently. Health wasn't something I had to strive for or earn. It was part of God's desire for His children. My responsibility wasn't to force the outcome. My responsibility was to walk in agreement with Him, steward what He had entrusted to me, and trust Him with the results.

And you know what? That changes everything. When your focus shifts from chasing results to partnering with God, you stop living from pressure and start living from peace. The scale no longer becomes your measure of success. Faithfulness becomes the measure. Alignment becomes the goal. And the fruit begins to show up as a natural byproduct of walking with God rather than running ahead of Him.

This is what it looks like when you respond from your identity as a Daughter.

When you understand who you are in Christ, your perspective begins to shift. You're no longer trying to earn healing, earn peace, earn breakthrough, or earn transformation. You're learning to walk in agreement with what God has already said is true.

That's why I believe so many of the struggles we face aren't actually the problem.

Sometimes the real issue is misalignment.

Sometimes we've been trying to solve an external issue when God is inviting us into a deeper level of partnership with Him.

Health was simply the area where I happened to notice it.

The truth is this applies to every area of life. It applies to your finances, your business, your relationships, your home, your calling, and the dreams God has placed in your heart.

The question is no longer, "How do I fix this?"

The question becomes, "Father, what do You say about this?"

And that one shift changes everything.

But here's what I've learned.

That question is rarely answered in the middle of rushing from one responsibility to the next. It's answered when you intentionally make space to be with God.

That's why Morning Stillness has become such an important rhythm in my life.

Before I reach for solutions, I reach for His presence.

Before I start making plans, I open His Word.

Before I let fear, pressure, or my own understanding lead the day, I invite the Holy Spirit to search my heart and realign my thinking with His truth.

Some mornings He brings conviction. Other mornings He brings comfort. Sometimes He reminds me of a Scripture I need to hold onto. Sometimes He gently uncovers something beneath the surface that I didn't even realize was shaping my decisions.

Those quiet moments have changed far more than my mornings.

They've changed the way I live.

Because realignment doesn't happen in a single breakthrough. It happens as we continually return to God's presence, ask, "Father, what do You say?" and choose to build our lives from His answer instead of our own understanding.
